Any number of materials can be used to fill the bottom of the canning jar. Many people use potpourri. This is not only visually attractive, but it adds the aroma of the potpourri as well.

Since you may be using somewhat flammable material in the bottom of the canning jar, it is essential that the votive is inside its own glass holder. Do not use a votive candle or a tea candle without a glass holder.

It is a good idea to not let the decorative material come up above the bottom of the votive holder and to extinguish the candle before it burns completely to the bottom. And as always, never leave the room with a candle burning.

1. Select Your Candle Making Fragrance

Fragrance oil is available in virtually any craft shop. You can also look for it on the internet. I would suggest that you opt for fragrance oils rather than going for cheap water or alcohol based fragrances. Since your wax mix will be oil based, your fragrance should also be oil based. Why? Oil and water do not mix so a water based perfume will not mix properly with the oil based wax.

2. Pick Your Wax

The basics of making scented candles are more or less the same as for ordinary wax candles. Begin by choosing your wax type. Available in the market is a versatile range of wax starting with the naturals, beeswax, palm & soy, and progressing to paraffin or gel wax. Decide on the aromatic intensity of your candles before making a wax selection. For instance, in case of gel candles, gel wax with less density holds less fragrance compared to gel wax with higher density.

3. The Art of Scented Candle Making

Now that we've talked about waxes, let's discuss the method for creating scented candles.

1st step is to melt your wax. I recommend using a double boiler. That means put the wax in a small pot. Now place that container into a slightly larger pot partially filled with water. Now heat the water. You'll need a thermometer to ensure the wax is not burnt. The temperature should be kept at 170-180 degrees Fahrenheit.

After the wax is melted, insert a wick into the mold and remove your wax from it's source of heat. Now add the fragrance oil that you have chosen. A mixture of 1 ounce of fragrance oil to 1 pound of wax will create a fragrance level equal to 6% of candle density. Appreciate that larger portions of fragrance oil means the candle to burn out sooner.

Next pour the melted wax/fragrance mixture into it's mold. The only job left is to let the whole thing cool before removing your candle from it's mold.

Congratulations! You're finished!

4. Try Different Things as You Go

Most candles seen on the store shelves are made from petroleum based paraffin. However, eco-friendly soy candles have gained a strong foothold in the marketplace and are very popular with handmade candle crafters. There is a far more beautiful candle wax that is also eco-friendly, and that's palm wax.

The most fascinating property of palm wax is its unique crystalline structure. When properly heated and cooled, it's the only candle wax capable of creating crystals that look like tiny starbursts, or iridescent Jack Frost-like crystals and long billowy feathers on window glass. There is even a version that creates tortoise shell-like patterns.

Coming from the oil of the seed of palm oil trees which are grown on farms, it's natural and renewable just like orchard fruit. While all candles create some amount of soot from burning wicks and fragrance oils, this wonderful wax creates no soot of its own as it's not a petroleum product.

It washes up easily with warm water and soap, making accidental spills a breeze to clean up. That's also a nice feature to have when reusing candle containers.

As a candle crafter myself, I like that I don't have to do a second pour when making candles because palm wax doesn't shrink like paraffin or soy wax. Because this versatile wax is slightly opaque, burning a candle in a clear glass container creates a beautiful soft glow from within. They look especially nice in the dark placed on a fireplace mantle or around a bathtub full of bubbles.

It also has excellent hot and cold scent throw. Unlit, one of these candles can scent a room. Lit, it can easily scent an average sized home.

Palm wax can hold more scent oil than other candle waxes, allowing for the creation of some highly fragranced candles. Another desirable property is that it doesn't impart any of its own scent into the candle, something that soy wax can't claim.

Palm wax resists melting in hot environments due to its high tolerance for heat. You may have found an old box of candles all bent and warped the last time you cleaned out the garage? That won't happen with palm wax candles. While it's not recommended to store candles in the heat because they can discolor and lose their scent, I have had candles in a hot garage for several months and none of them lost their shape or crystalline patterns.

You may have seen or heard of Mia Bella candles from a company called Scent-Sations.  Their candles are made with palm wax, but I found them to be far too costly and that's what prompted me to learn how to make my own.

The popularity of gel candles is ever increasing; hence, many people want to know how to make gel candles.  They work the same as regular wax candles in the respect that they will burn in the same way that wax candles burn, but they are made a little differently.

Oil is the source for wax candles.  The same is true with gel candles but they are made of 95% mineral oil and 5% polymer resin.  The resin is transformed into a solid state from its initial powder form by mixing it with mineral oil.

Gel wax comes in three different states: high density, medium density, and low density.  The higher the density, the more fragrance the oil can hold.  In addition, suspended decorations within the candle can be held up by thicker gel.  But, keep in mind that the thicker gel takes longer to meld and it is harder to pour.

The process of how to make gel candles is the same as making regular wax candles; the wax is melted then poured into a mold to dry.  But, the equipment you use and the techniques are slightly different.  With other types of candle wax most people use a double boiler to melt the wax.  However, attempting to melt gel wax in a double boiler would take too long.

Some gel candle makers have learned how to make gel candles by using multi-cookers to get the job done.  A multi-cooker is kind of like a deep fryer.  They are usually metal with a non-stick coating.  They have a separate heating element with a temperature dial so you can get the proper temperature to melt the gel wax.  The gel wax is placed directly in the multi-cooker to melt, instead of using two separate pots.  It is advisable to check the temperature with the help of a separate thermometer, even if the multi-cooker has its own temperature dial.

Gel wax should be stirred using something made of metal or hard plastic.  Bubbles can form in the gel if wooden spoons are used.  The most important thing to remember when learning how to make gel candles is that gel candle wax can catch fire.  Make sure you have a chemical fire extinguisher near by.

Dyes can be used to change the color of the gel candle wax.  In order to maintain the translucency of the gel, liquid dies are recommended.  It only takes a very small amount of the dye to actually change the color of the wax.  Even a single drop of dye is sometimes a large quantity.  You should never use crayons, clothing dye, food coloring, or soap dyes in gel candle wax.  Since, they are not made for candles, they will not burn properly.

Learning how to make gel candles is fast and easy.  There are numerous possibilities that can be done with gel candle wax.  The best thing about gel candles is that you can add decorations directly to the wax so that they float within the candle.  This is a clever and unique way to personalize a gift if you are making the candle for someone else.  Plus, gel candles burn slower than regular wax candles so they will last a little longer.
