People starting out in candle making are often surprised, if not outright bewildered, by all the different kinds of candle making wax available today.  Here’s a quick run down on the different types of candle making wax available.

Paraffin Candle Wax

Paraffin is the most commonly used wax, both in commercial production and by the home hobbyist.

Paraffin is a side product of petroleum refinement. It’s what’s left when crude oil is refined.

Different grades of paraffin candle wax are available. Most suppliers indicate which is their “general purpose” candle wax and that’s usually a good one for beginners to start with. The wax is widely available, relatively inexpensive, maintains its shape in tapers, retains dyes and fragrant oils well and burns relatively cleanly (at least compared to tallow).

Soy Candle Wax

Soy candle wax is an exciting newcomer on the candle making scene. Researchers developed it by hydrogenating (adding hydrogen molecules to) soybean oil. Hydrogenated soybean oil is fairly solid and burns well as a  candle wax. The main difficulty is that most formulations are fairly soft and don’t always work well in applications such as making tapers.

Soy candle wax really shines when it comes to making container candles. It has a long burn time, burns cleanly and does well with added fragrance and color.

Beeswax

Beeswax is a great, albeit expensive, candle making wax. Bees produce the wax to build honeycombs to hold the honey. Beekeepers can harvest both the wax and the honey.

Beeswax produces minimal soot and burns smoothly and evenly. It is a firmer wax than soy candle wax so you can use it for tapers. You can add scent to beeswax, but I prefer not to – it has a very subtle fragrance of its own.

Unfortunately, beeswax costs more than other waxes. This has always been the case. Historically, beeswax candles were the candles of the rich. It's more affordable these days, but still more expensive than most other candle waxes.

Where to Learn More

The waxes I've mentioned here are by far the most commonly used candle making waxes available. You'd do just fine if these were the only ones you knew about.

However it's well worth digging a little deeper and visiting the page: Candle Making Wax. You'll discover some interesting waxes I haven't mentioned here, as well as some more details about paraffin and soy wax.

Of course you need more than wax to make a candle. You can find out what equipment and supplies you'll need at: Candle Making Equipment
I want to recommend an excellent site for you to find out everything you need to know to start making candles every bit as beautiful as those you buy: The Candle Making Connection. I've learned the hard way that you can save a lot of time and frustration if you visit sites like that and get some insider tips and advice before you start experimenting on your own.

Beeswax remains one of the most valued candle making materials. People have treasured its mild aroma and clean burning characteristics for generations. We have a lot more choices today yet beeswax remains the preferred natural alternative to petroleum based paraffin. Here's how to make beeswax candles using a simple and easy to learn method.

Traditionally, people have made beeswax candles by even the dipping method or by using molds. I'm about to teach you a much simpler method that uses sheets of beeswax.

Beeswax sheets for candle making are commonly about 10 x 16" in size. They commonly have a textured pattern imprinted on the surface. A characteristic of beeswax is that it remains flexible at room temperature, which makes it possible to produce a candle without melting the wax and using a mold.

Start by laying a sheet of beeswax on a smooth, flat surface. A clean kitchen counter or table works fine. The height of the candle is determined by the width of the sheet. If you want to make a shorter candle, simply trim the sheet using a straight edge and a sharp knife.

Arrange the sheet so that the edge that will become the center of the candle is toward you. Cut a piece of wick so it is an inch or so longer than the candle height. Gently press the wick into the edge of the wax, leaving a little bit extending beyond each end.

The next step is to roll the wax around the wick forming the candle. Use a firm but gentle pressure and take care to press evenly along the length of the candle. If you press too hard you risk distorting the candle.

In cold weather, the wax may be a little stiff. If this happens, you can use a hairdryer on a low setting to warm the wax. Be careful as you do this - too much heat will ruin the candle.

When you reach the end of the sheet, gently press the edge of the wax into the body of the candle to make a smooth seam. If you'd like a thicker candle, such as a pillar, continue rolling with another sheet of wax.

After you've gained experience making this type of candle, you'll definitely should look into some of the more traditional ways of making beeswax candles. You can find full instructions in these methods, including tips for success, at: How to Make Beeswax Candles
Of course, beeswax is not the only material you can use to make candles. You can find out about other possible choices at: Candle Making Wax.

Now that you know how to make beeswax candles I hope you'll consider learning other candle making techniques as well.

Essential oils are used in lotions, creams, aromatherapy and perfumes and in many more products where a pleasant smell is needed. A number of methods are used in order to extract the essential oils from plant material and flowers. Essential oil makes up only a tiny percentage of the plant or flower therefore a considerable amount of plant material is used to produce a small amount of oil. In excess of 100 pounds is generally needed to produce one ounce of essential oil. A number of plants are also much too fragile to use the cheaper methods and more time consuming and expensive methods have to be used. Essential oils are often very expensive although they are very concentrated. Most recipes only require a few drops so a tiny bottle may last for a many months or years.

Steam Distillation

Steam distillation is in use for most of the essential oil manufacture. Pressurised steam is passed through the flowers placed on mesh screens inside a still. The oils are absorbed by the steam which then is lead to a further compartment where it is cooled down. On condensing the oil floats on the top of the water and is skimmed off. The water left behind is called floral water and can be used as it contains small amounts of the oil. It is used for mists and toners. Floral water may be used by people who are hypersensitive to essential oils as it is less concentrated.

Solvent Extraction

For plants and flowers too fragile to use steam extraction, another method such as solvent extraction must be used. In this technique a solvent is passed over the flowers on mesh trays. The esential oils, together with some other soluble materials, are absorbed by the solvent which is then filtered and the resulting solution distilled to take off the solvent. The material left, called a concrete, is a waxy solid that contains the pigments, essential oils and waxes from the flowers. Some further processes are then used in order to extract the oils and waxes from the concrete. The concrete is used in perfumes and the waxes are used in lotions, creams and in candle making.

Enfleurage

For flowers or plants with only extremely low percentages of essential oils, such as jasmine, a different technique needs to be used. Flowers are placed into odourless vegetable oil and left for a few days and then the plant material is replaced. Fresh flowers are repeatedly placed in the vegetable oil until the oil is saturated with the oils from the plant material. Alcohol is then used to extract the essential oil from the vegetable oil. The alcohol is evaporated and the unadulterated essential oil is left behind. This treatment takes many days and uses a large amount of plant material and the resulting oil is very expensive.

Cold Pressing

Some oils such as citrus, in which the oil is extracted from fruit not plant material, use a procedure known as cold pressing. This entails rolling the fruit between spikes which pierce the peel and then the fruit is squeezed to extract the juices which contain the oil. The resulting juice is then centrifuged to separate and collect the essential oil.

Carbon Dioxide Extraction

In this method carbon dioxide is used to remove the essential oil. The gas is pumped into a chamber that contains the flowers or plant material. When the pressure increases the gas liquifies and absorbs the oils. The gas is then let into a further compartment where the pressure is released. The carbon dioxide vapourises which leaves behind the essential oil.

As no residues are left the oil is extremely clean and has a lovely, fresh fragrance. As the temperature used is much lower than that used for steam distillation, essential oil can be extracted from delicate plants and flowers that are ruined by steam distillation.

People everywhere are enjoying this fun hobby and learning to make thier very own handmade candles for themselves. All different kinds of candles can be made, including dipped tapers, votives, pillars and more, and there are all kinds of different colors, sizes and scents available. It's easy to do, too, so just about anybody can make their own candles.

You can make anything from a decorative centerpiece candle to scented jar candles to practical lighting candles. Mistakes are easily dealt with - just melt your candles down and try again if you don't like what comes out. Because of this, candle making is one of the most forgiving hobbies in the world.

You can choose to purchase a candle making kit for your first candles, try the craft store for some basic supplies purchased separately, or order from a specialty candle making store online. Each method has its benefits and downsides.

Kits come with all the components you need, but can be limiting since you don't get to select them. Local stores allow you to purchase your own supplies, but may not have a great selection. Online shops offer the largest range of options, but you don't get to see your purchases before you buy, so research is important.

No matter how you get them, the supplies and tools you'll need to make your first candles are relatively simple. You'll require some candle wicks and wax, a method of melting the candles (double boilers and microwaves are both popular), and a method of protecting your work surface from wax like heavy plastic or newspaper.

You'll also need molds for candles like votives and pillars, and jars for soft waxes that never become quite solid. If you want to do things the old fashioned way and use a dipped candle, make sure you have something to dip into that's deep enough, a place to hang finished candles for cooling, and something to suspend wicking from. All candle makers will also need a thermometer.

Don't do any candle making around your pets or your kids, and make sure you take safety precautions like wearing the proper clothing. This will keep you from having to deal with spilled hot wax and the burns that come from it. There are low temperature specialty waxes that aren't as dangerous, however.

Most people also like to color and add a candle fragrance with a combination of dyes and perfumes. While these are chemicals, most of them are non toxic - just don't eat them. Make sure you remember that candle dyes can stain, so handle them with care and add them to your melted wax slowly to prevent mottling.

That's really all you need when it comes to basic candle making, and the supplies can be pretty inexpensive. A few old candle stubs, some wick, and a jar can help you make your first practice candles. Once you get used to doing it, you can work with multiple colors, mix your own shades, and work in more creativity.

pillar candles

The idea of having a burning torch in your home is probably not appealing unless you live in a big castle. Unfortunately, most people do not live in a big, huge castle so torchlight may not be an issue. But candle light, on the other hand, may be something that you are familiar with and use often to create a scented home or for use during a power outage. Think about where the world of technology and medicine would be without the use of this luminescent source. We rely on candles quite a bit to bail us out of an emergency but think back to when there was no such thing as electricity.

Did you know that candles in the past were made from ground up bugs, berries and animal fat? They sure were. It was the only thing available at the time. Today, we do not have to worry about that. The candle sitting in your home is probably a scented candle made from paraffin wax and can be found in many different stores, such as discount dollar stores, retail and upscale shops, and even in your local supermarket. You do not have to worry about the smell of animal fat or ground up bugs scenting your home.

Using paraffin wax has become the traditional method for making candles in today's era and it is remarkably easy to do at home. You can find kits that contain everything from the wax, the wicks and the scented oils that make the pillar candles that you so dearly love. The absolute hardest thing about making these candles is melting the wax. However, simply follow the directions and you can have your own homemade candles.

Most kits contain a wax that you have to melt using a double boiler. This ensures that the wax does not burn or catch on fire. The next step is pouring the melted wax into the included mold. After adding the wick you are done and you just have to wait for the candle to harden. It is really that easy. Some kits now even include paraffin wax that can be melted in the microwave for an even easier time.

Before you go out and buy a bunch of home decor candles or scented candles, consider making your own. There are plenty of candle making kits on the market today and most are incredibly easy to use. You simply melt the wax, insert the wick and let it dry. You can find a huge assortment of decorative molds for your homemade candles to go into, or you can use empty, rinsed milk cartons. You can also find decorative holders to showcase your final product. Plus, homemade candles make excellent birthday, wedding or anniversary gifts for anyone that you know.

Since earliest times, candles have symbolized the triumph of light over darkness, warmth over cold, community over isolation. In many cultures throughout history people placed candles in their windows to welcome passing strangers into their homes where they could find food and a roof over their heads for the night. During the Middle Ages people would light a large candle both at home and in church, and families during Victorian times used pins or melted wax to attach candles to Christmas tree branches.

These days, candles are more of something to appreciate than a necessity. This has led to candles not being just one, uniform style, to create a particular function, but instead to their being created in a variety of styles, colours, designs and scents to fit any mood or theme. Candle centerpieces are always a big hit at a banquet.

In fact, many people, women in particular love candles for special occasions. Valentine candles are pretty. Finally, Valentine candles are often very personal. Many people purchase candles as decorative objects for candle making ideas while a few actually buy then for the scent they emit while burning. Even if you’re not a big fan of candles, what would a candlelit dinner be without the candles? Scented romantic candles can also add the perfect touch to a special occasion like Valentine’s Day, an anniversary or even a private birthday dinner.

Other products used for making candles in its early history was wax from insects and seeds, wax from boiling cinnamon, and fish. Non-organic candles made from chemicals and synthetics that emit toxic chemical into the air when burnt where as organic candles burn 100% pure and clean. Isn't putting those toxins on your body enough little lone breathing them in and soaking more of them in through your pores? Generally, it is a vegetable wax base and is scented with pure essential oils.

Candles are among the most romantic and practical lighting ideas and a pleasure to use. Beeswax candles are also used in worship and prayer. Whether you use jar candles, multiple wick candles, pillar or taper candles, you would need a sturdy candleholder so that they can burn safely without dripping wax. Fireplace candelabra can accent your hearth and your home with their warm glow.

Are you interested in learning about how to make soap? There are a wide variety of ingredients available to make homemade soap. The list ranges from the basic ingredients of water, lye, and oil to optional ingredients such as oatmeal and even glitter. The type of soap you want to use determines the ingredients you will need when making your own soap. Some people who make homemade soap stick to the basics and simply add fragrant oils to put some scent into their soaps, while others add abrasive materials such as oatmeal for exfoliating purposes.

Here is a list of some common supplies and ingredients used in making soap and what characteristic they can provide your soap:

Basic Ingredients to Make Homemade Soap

Carrier Oils

The type of soap you will make determines the base soap you need to use. Do you want your homemade soap to be hard? Soft? Sudsy? You can start finding out about the different base oils by reading the labels of commercial soaps you use regularly. You can also sign on to mailing lists and join soap making groups online; most of the people who know how to make homemade soap are very willing to share information with others.

Carrier oils impart the primary physical characteristics of the soaps. Hard and long lasting soaps can be made from palm oils; soaps that give a good lather can be made using coconut oil and castor oil; olive oil, canola oil or soybean oil may be used to make moisturizing and conditioning soaps; and luxury soaps can be made using cocoa butter, hemp oil, and almond oil among other things. Oils such as almond and avocado oil provide a skin softening characteristic to your soaps. Different oils mean different soaps. Once you become familiar with the properties each oil imparts, you will begin to recognize what kind of bar a particular recipe will produce.

Lye

Lye is the most important ingredient in making soap if you are using the cold or hot processes. Sodium hydroxide or lye is a very strong chemical and handling it requires serious caution. You also need to choose your utensils carefully when dealing with lye - use only wooden and plastic spoons for stirring and bowls made of enamel, plastic or glass for mixing. Only cold water should be used with lye, and always remember to pour the lye into the water.

You cannot make homemade soap bars from scratch without using lye. If, however, you do want to skip using lye, you can try using the melt and pour method with pre-made glycerin soap bases.

Water

Another main ingredient in soap making, water is essential to the process. For the best results, use distilled water for creating your lye solution. You can also use de-mineralized water in soap making.

Other Ingredients

Other ingredients you can include once you have learned how to make homemade soap are herbs, flower petals, glitter, colorants, essential oils, and fragrant oils.

Herbs and flower petals can add scent to your soap, but you should remember that these can be burned when added to hot processed soap. Some other herbs do not look at all appealing when used in soaps. If you want to use herbs in your homemade soap, do your research and find out what herbs can are good for use in making soap.

Colorants come in different forms - liquids, powders and glycerin based colorants are common. Use these to add color to your soap, however, you should also remember that all other ingredients can affect the final outcome of your soap color.

Glitter can be used to add a certain punch to your homemade soaps. Use cosmetic grade glitter; these come in ultrafine and fine sizes and in a wide variety of colors. Do not use glitter made for use in craft projects as they are not meant to be used on your skin.

Using essential oils in your soap can have health positive effects. Some essential oils such as chamomile can be rather expensive. It really is up to you if you want to add essential oils to your soap. If you want to simply add a scent without a therapeutic effect, you can opt to use fragrance oils instead.

Knowledge of ingredients as well as creativity and imagination is required once you know how to make soap at home in order to create something that is truly unique. When making your own soap, do your research and do not be afraid to try out new things.

When it comes to handmade soap, people have been making lye soap for thousands of years. Whether they use the hot process or the cold process, lye soap is a staple in most cultures. While lye is a harmful substance in its pure form, with the proper precautions, you can safely learn how to make lye soap that can be both decorative and functional.

The Benefits of Making Lye Soap

When lye is combined with oil it goes through a chemical reaction called saponification. During this process, both soap molecules and glycerin are formed. There are two main methods used for creating soap in this manner; the hot process and the cold process.

As the names suggest, one has heat applied during the process while the other does not. The use of the heat in the hot process accelerates saponification and makes your soap ready for use more quickly. Nevertheless, that method is more complicated and most hobbyists choose the cold process in order to make their soap. With the cold process, it can take several weeks before the soap is ready for use.

You used to be able to obtain lye from your local store but due to its harmful qualities, most stores have pulled it from their shelves. Lye is still easily obtained online, however, and you can readily find soap suppliers to sell you lye in whatever quantities you need.

The Cautions of Making Lye Soap

When making lye soap you need to be extremely cautious. Lye is a very harmful substance before it goes through the saponifcation process. It will cause serious burns if it comes in contact with your skin or eyes. When you are learning how to make lye soap, it is vital that you acquire the proper safety habits and equipment. Be sure to have gloves, safety goggles, and a working surface that is protected. It is recommended to use products that are glass, enamel, plastic or wooden to mix the water with the lye to prevent any unwanted reactions from taking place. Also, make sure your working surface is well separated or protected from surfaces where you prepare and consume food. If you buy a large quantity of lye and you will not use it all at once, keep the remainder well labeled and out of reach of children or pets as it can be very harmful to them.

The first steps to making lye soap are to measure the lye and the water. Lye is commonly sold in brick form, which makes it easy to measure. When making lye soap, however, it is important to remember that you always add the lye to the water. Water and lye have an interesting chemical relationship and if you were to pour the water into the lye, the lye might explode getting the chemical on your skin and whatever else is around. If you add the lye very slowly to the water, the lye does not explode but, rather, heats up the water - sometimes getting as hot as 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Basic Cold Process Instructions for How to Make Lye Soap

After the lye and water are combined to create the lye solution, add it to a pot of oils you have prepared to make the soap mixture. Stir the soap mixture until it thickens and reaches "trace". It is at this point that you can add your scents and colorants to customize your soap. Stir them into the soap mixture and pour it into your molds. Let the soaps set for 24 hour before removing it from the molds and allowing them to cure for 4-6 weeks.

While there are a lot of precautions to be taken when it comes to making lye soap, it can still be a very enjoyable hobby. People have been making lye soap for generations and, with the variety of colors and designs available to customize the soap, it has become a luxurious handcrafted product found in gift stores and bath stores alike. Now it is time for you to test your hand at learning how to make lye soap!

If you have kids, you most likely have plenty of old crayons around the house that are no longer used. Before throwing them out, consider using them to make candles. This can be a great way to turn them into something new and useful again. Most children will love the idea of making candles and enjoy knowing their old crayons were used to make them. Making candles out of crayons can also be a great gift idea.

Before you get started, discuss safety with your children. Since the crayons will have to be melted at a  high heat, they may not be able to participate in that part of the candle making process. Assure them that there are many other aspects of the candle making that they can be a part of.

To start, gather your supplies. In addition to the crayons, you will need a wax carton. This can be from milk, fabric softener, or orange juice container. You will also need paraffin wax, two full ice cube trays, a double boiler, and white packing string. If you don’t want to use your double boiler, an old coffee can and a saucepan will work just as well.

Trim the top off of the wax carton, leaving it approximately six inches high.  Cut the string for the wick at least 8 inches long. You will later trim the wick to fit the holder. To ensure a wick that burns easier, take three pieces and braid them together. Use smaller pieces of string to tie the ends together. The holders for your candles can be anything you desire as long as they are non-flammable. Pretty vases, glasses, and jars work nicely.

Melt about three pounds of paraffin wax in the double boiler or coffee can. Melting will be faster if the wax is cut into small pieces. The melting process with take about fifteen to twenty minutes. While the wax is melting, peel the papers off of the old crayons. You and your children can choose to separate the colors by lights and darks to have a mix that combines well or you can mix them all together and see what the color ends up being.

For best results, only add the crayons to the wax after it has completely melted. After melthing the crayons and wax, pour the mixture into your candles holders as soon as possible. If you would like to make scented candles, try adding a splash of cinnamon or vanilla to your hot wax mixture.

It is important that the candles be left alone to completely harden. Make sure you have an area where this can be done. It is also important to make sure small children can’t reach them because the wax will stay hot for several hours and can cause serious injuries.

Making candles out of old crayons is a great way to spend the afternoon creating a fun project with your kids!
